CHAPTER NINE

“I suppose we should be grateful that Arden put up all these cameras,” I said as the footage showed up on the laptop.

We were sitting in Arden’s office in the library. Detective Sterling was still busy with his interrogation, but he had gotten Arden to allow us to review all the security footage from the past week.

“It’s creepy,” Aunt Daisy Mae said with a shiver. “It’s like she’s watching us from every angle. I stand by what I said a few days ago: this place is a house of horrors.”

Jasper was playing among the shelves in the library. He had spent a lot of time in libraries during his life, and he was perfectly at home among all the books.

“I have to admit that it freaks me out too,” I said.

We had looked through all the footage from the day of Grace’s death, but we hadn’t found anything that we didn’t already know. However, we weren’t going to give up so easily, and we were combing through the footage as carefully as we could.

The security system was state of the art and every camera streamed live footage to an app that Arden had on her laptop and on her phone. It also saved footage on the cloud, so we were able to access up to a month’s worth of security videos. I had never worked on a case where there was so much security footage before.

“Here’s something,” I said, clicking on a video of the living room from the day before Grace died. It had alerted Arden that two people had raised their voices in the area. I marveled at the efficiency of the technology.

Once the video opened, I recognized Eris and Grace standing across from each other. Grace looked livid, which was surprising. She always seemed like such a passive person. Eris looked taken aback too.

“That looks intense,” Aunt Daisy Mae commented.

Jasper ran up to me and jumped on my lap. He poked his head over the side of the table and watched the screen curiously. When I moved to click the play button, he climbed onto the desk and began swatting my hand.

“Jasper, no,” I said sternly.

He responded by sitting on the laptop’s keys. I quickly pulled out a sheet of white paper from the printer and put it on the desk. Jasper sniffed it then sat on the paper, allowing me to get back to the footage.

When I clicked play, Grace’s voice emanated from the speakers. It was eerie.

“I can’t believe you’ve done this,” Grace said, the fury evident in her voice.

“No one got hurt, and I had to play both sides to see who would win,” Eris said calmly, taking a seat on one of the couches.

“I trusted you!” Grace said, her voice rising. “I would never have blown up my life if you hadn’t promised to back me up.”

“Look, Grace,” Eris said, studying her nails with a lazy air, “I know you’re upset; I understand. But you needed a push to get out there on your own, and that’s exactly what I gave you.
